Featured above and below: Photographs by Gilles Berquet

A retrospective covering more than 100 years of glorious French lingerie is coming to Copenhagen this winter from the 12th to the 21st of December, 2017. Following shows in Paris, London, Shanghai, Dubai, Berlin, New York, Toronto, Moscow, Tokyo, Barcelona, Milan and Miami, the French Association Promincor/Lingerie Française. presents this exhibition in The National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. This is the first time ever that the museum will host an external exhibition.

Ten renowned French lingerie brands – Aubade, Chantelle, Empreinte, Implicite, Lise Charmel, Lou, Louisa Bracq, Maison Lejaby, Passionata, and Simone Pérèle opened their treasures to the public and made this exhibition possible.

In total, approximately 130 exhibits will be presented, from ancient corsets of the XIXth century to the very first custom-made bras, and from the very first girdles to contemporary items. A wide and glamorous selection of landmark pieces will trace the evolution of techniques and materials, including both the history of intimacy and the narrative of women’s liberation. All of these unique pieces reflect the daily lives of millions of women and were sold all over the world.

These corsets, panties, bras, girdles, thongs, and bodysuits will also come to life through video installations, advertisements, and the most outstanding photographs from each era. Holographic sequences will evoke the evolution of lingerie, changes in the aesthetic of the female body, and the expression of emotion and movement that defines the crossroads of form and function. Last but not least, an amazing 3D animation illustrates the construction of a bra: no less than thirty pieces of various origins and materials need to be dyed and assembled to the precision of a millimeter, while meeting specific safety standards required of lingerie since it is the first element that touches the skin… a truly unique savoir-faire!

The exhibition is curated by Catherine Ormen, a well-known Parisian-based fashion historian. She has written several books about fashion history and design. Celebrated French photographer Gilles Berquet is behind the amazing photography displayed in the exhibition. He is renown for showcasing and dramatizing the feminine silhouette in a theatrical context, and has a wide and diverse body of work.
